Owner and Chef Mark Oosthuizen began his career in 1999, working as a chef and trainee at a Japanese restaurant in Port Elizabeth. Mark quickly developed an enthusiastic interest in the art of Asian cuisine, which led him to seek further apprenticeship.
In 2000, Mark moved to Cape Town where he spent three and a half years working at Willoughby’s and Co at the Cape Town waterfront. It was here that he was fortunate to be able to learn from the industry best, including four Japanese and Singaporean master chefs. Working in the mother city also gave Mark the opportunity to cater for celebrity clients such as Nicholas Cage, Samuel L Jackson, Caprice and Vin Diesel.
In 2003, Mark entered a new season of his life and career, as he got married and also began to think about how to realise his dreams to one day own his own Sushi Restaurant. He made the decision to step out on his own, and with the assistance of a close friend, was able to establish a small catering business in March 2004. Fushin was born. The company began by providing catering to the film and corporate industry in Cape Town. Mark’s hard work and boldness to realise his dream began paying off, he developed a good reputation in the local catering industry and was able to move the business from his garage to his own premises in Sea Point in 2006.
The year 2007 brought more change, Mark’s son was born and the family began to look at moving back to Mark’s home town of Port Elizabeth. In February 2008, Mark established Fushin Sushi at the Port Elizabeth harbour, sharing premises with another restaurant.
The first year of trading went extremely well, and the new Sushi restaurant began to grow a strong reputation in the local area. Mark began to search for and acquire young and talented staff members who he has since trained to be able to deliver the level of excellence expected by his now well-established brand.
The Fushin Sushi Lounge opened its doors in June 2008. An ideal premises in the up-and-coming neighbourhood of Richmond Hill was found, and Mark began renovations to create the elegant yet relaxed eating and socialising environment that it is today.
The restaurant is well-loved for its selection of exotic dishes such as Norwegian Salmon, Australian Eel, Soft Shell Crab and Peruvian Scallops or Alaskan Snow Crab, to name a few. The Robata Grill offers customers the opportunity to try traditional Kobe Japanese style cooking as well as Fushin Style Tempura and Asian Tapas.
Mark and his staff work hard to ensure that each and every dish is produced with the level of excellence that has become associated with this fine restaurant.
Fushin Sushi Lounge is an ideal environment for corporate gatherings or relaxed evenings out with friends.
